Self Assessment Suggestions!

Hi Folks,

After reading over your self assessments (great job on those btw) there were some good suggestions that you gave for both me and you to work on.  I want to post some of those so that we can share our great ideas:)

Suggestions for Me (the teacher):
  • Before the accountability checks review everything as a class.
  • Make sure the questions are clear.
  • A few more opportunities to practice
  • Less practice
  • Go over all the questions
  • Give less alone work, more group work and NO homework.
  • More practice opportunities but less questions, I procrastinate at home
  • More time to work
  • Give more examples
Suggestions for you (the students):
  • Ask for help when you don't understand.
  • Be able to solve problems the way I am used to not being forces to keep stuff in fractions
  • Practice more and go over assignments
  • Remember the steps of the procedures.
  • Try harder to understand
  • Use a calculator
  • Stay after school for help
  • Get Ms. Scallion to explain it again
  • Pay attention more
  • Go on the blog and look at the notes
  • Try not to get distracted
  • Check my work
  • Start doing my homework
  • practice at home even when I don't have homework.
  • Ask a super smart classmate
So it looks like we cam up with a few strategies to try in order to improve our work...both mine and yours.
Have a good four day weekend and remember to get your homework done.

Cheers
Ms. Scallion

You will need to scroll through the slide show (arrows at the bottom) to get to the examples we did in class. Just a reminder that the pink sheet corrections and the 6 questions from T2 and six questions from T3 are due Monday:)

Math mind movers 8 to 17

Hi Folks, Here are the answers to your current mind movers! Yes they are all marked and I hope to have them entered into the computer tonight.

Some friendly advise from your math teacher: Please make sure you answer the Mind movers FULLY! Some of you are losing marks simply because you didn't explain your answer. Be careful and lets try to improve:)

Friday's Fiasco

Hi Folks,
What a day Friday was...I hear that you were assigned 2/3 more work than I had intended!  Like how I worked a rational number in there:) This is what you were supposed to have done for Monday:

Part A - One column ONLY
Part B - All of it
Part C - Finish the puzzle.

I know some of you did way more than that.  So because some of you followed instructions of the fill-in teacher (thank you!) here is what I am assigning for due for WEDNESDAY October 20:
All of Part A
All of Part B
Finish the Puzzle.

Happy 3 Day week!
Ms. Scallion

Reward

Hi Folks,

I just want to say how pleased I am with the work you have been doing as a class.  This has been a great start up to the year and as a reward (and a nice break from math class) during block B we will be watching Ironman with the other grade 9 classes in the theater.

There is a catch however... you must have last nights homework completed before you go.  If you come to class and the work is not complete you will have to stay in the classroom until it is done.  So the moral of this story is DO YOUR HOMEWORK :)

TEST your Skills Tuesday

Just a reminder that we will be having a small quiz on Tuesday that will include the topics:
  1. Convert Fractions to decimals
  2. Convert decimals to fractions
  3. Identify equivalent fractions
  4. Order rational numbers on and off a number line.
  5. Create a rational number between two given numbers
Good Luck! Remember that I am available at 3:30 pm if you need extra help.

Number systems

Number Systems, different number families and how they relate to one another!

Mind mover 1 to 7

As promised, here are the mind benders and solutions for the first seven classes!

Critical Thinking

This is a Becel commercial but it sends a great message to start thinking beyond what we see in front of us.  Try to think about a difficult problem in a different way...you might find that the problem wasn't all that hard to begin with.

Welcome to the Class Blog

Hi Folks,
Welcome to the class blog! This is the place where I will post our lessons, questions that we've down in class, mathematical information and every once in a while an assignment or a request for you to respond to a post that I have made.

Also, I will post the answers to the Mind Movers here.  So instead of taking class-time to review the daily Mind Mover, I'll post it here so you can review the solutions.

It's an exciting time to be in math classes at RDPC! Let the fun begin!
